Gnome breaks Unity [on hold]

13.10

I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10. I thought I'd play around with the GNOME desktop so, I installed it.

However, it now seems there is no going back. When I attempt to switch back to Unity from the login screen, I get a hybrid of both Unity and GNOME.

I have two questions:

How do I restore Unity? It appears to be broken.
I've also heard that Cinnamon breaks Unity in 13.10. What desktops are currently compatible with 13.10?
